  • Pinout SmartOBD getting extremely hot

    I just finished repairing Omoda and wanted to read and clear faults on it on the table, i connected my canfd and connect my wires as normal and wanted to read faults, it identified my module but when it wanted to read faults it said failed and when i attempted to clear it said Can not set CAN filter ID

    then i noticed my smartprog is really hot, i unplugged it opened it and noticed the ARM chip is whats getting so extremely hot, i think maybe usb power might be free flowing into the arm chip at 5V instead of the 3v the arm chip is rated at, could smart-prog or AST_Support please advise me what i can check and how to test it? im assuming some component thats supposed to restrict voltage amount going into ARM.

    Additional note, i just made a custom usb cable that i just fed 3v to, if i just feed 3v into the smartobd then the chip stays cool, so definately a incoming voltage control issue, if i know what to replace on the pcb that controls the usb voltage i can simply replace it, any advice would be much appreciated

      Can you describe how the USB power came directly to the ARM chip.
      The 3V output of SmartProg is not power for the ARM chip.

          Oh i see, no i guess then im mistaken and dont understand how these smartprogs work, i simply assumed the arm chip is getting too much voltage from the usb. please find aatched picture of my smartprog pcb

            another note, it still is detected in astcantool so it is not dead but im afraid it will die very quick if i leave it long enough, definately not safe, its not even touchable and smells like electronics, thats how hot it gets, too scared to try and fix a airbag module with it incase it zaps the module dead also

              This is a power chip for the ARM chip. Check these voltages.

                ok thanks, voltage coming from the power chip seems fine, middle one outputs close to 3V like it should, is there anything else that could cause this arm chip to get so hot?

                  Just a thought, could the crystal oscillator have a issue and overclock the arm too fast and thats why its overheating?

                    The chip is damaged. There is nothing we can do. You should order a new SmartOBD.
